Jay Singh-Sohal has welcomed the news that 98.4% of Solihull now has access to Gigabit broadband, thanks to ongoing investment from the Conservative Government.

It comes as the UK reaches a major connectivity milestone, with 80% of residents’ country-wide now having access to high-speed internet connections.

Better connectivity helps families, boosts productivity for businesses and unlocks new digital opportunities for people from every walk of life. This is essential for growing the economy and creating job opportunities.

Jay Singh-Sohal, a strategic communications director and broadcaster by trade, says he knows just how much of an impact high-speed connectivity will make for local residents.  He said:

“I’ve often found that getting a decent internet connection can be a frustration in parts of Solihull, especially when working remotely or on the move as I often do.  So, it’s welcome news for both households and businesses that nearly all of the borough is now covered for high-speed connectivity.

“This is due to the investment from the Government and through the efforts of the telecoms industry, and it’ll make lives much easier and more productive for our families, as well as help boost our local economy.”

Commenting, Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan said:

“This is another giant leap forward in our mission to bring gigabit connectivity to every part of the UK, with 80 per cent of the country now able to benefit from lightning-fast broadband.

“Access to gigabit speeds does not just mean being able to seamlessly stream films, TV shows, and shop online all at once. It means better productivity for businesses and new opportunities for local communities with digital infrastructure which will help power our economy, create jobs and improve lives for decades to come.”

Project Gigabit is a flagship £5 Billion programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access lightning-fast gigabit-capable broadband.  Gigabit coverage across the UK has since increased rapidly, from one in ten households in 2019 to eight in ten today.

It means the UK is currently building gigabit networks faster than any EU country.  The Conservative are now working hard with broadband suppliers to achieve at least 85% gigabit coverage of the UK by 2025, and full nationwide coverage by 2030.

Ends.
